Hey Mr Conductor! Part 1

Want to show off your ork as a virtuoso ensemble? Want to have the reputation of a Chailly as a daredevil? There's a ton of neglected showpieces out there.

FRANCO ALFANO (1875-1954): Sym 2. 38 mins.
PRO:Socking great 'hunk of glittering orchestration' (David Hurwitz, www.classicstoday.com), decent tunes, furious rhythmic drive, and brassy I-don't-give-a-shit-me Khachaturianesque OTT-ness. The finale, even if taken slowly, will blow you away. Hold on tight for one of the most dramatic accelerandos in the whole repertoire - and make sure the roof's screwed down for the final chord.
CON: Could be used as newsreel soundtrack for Italian invasion of Abyssinia.
